“Talent needs freedom to develop as well as tolerance on the part of the teacher.” (Jens Ellermann)

Jens Ellermann is one of the most distinguished Professors of Violin today. Several generations of violinists have studied at his well-known school; some went on to become famous soloists, others have become leaders of important orchestras or contribute to the string sound of the great orchestras of the world.

Walther Levin, the legendary leader of the La Salle Quartet, brought the young Ellermann to Cincinnati; Dorothy Delay, whom Ellermann once affectionately called “the big diamond”, secured her young colleague, whose style of teaching was similar to hers, for the New York Juilliard School.

For 20 years Ellermann, who was born in Hamburg, led a demanding but fulfilling and extremely successful life as a teacher in the USA before his longing for Europe, which he could visit only rarely, overwhelmed him. He greatly missed his family, his friends, the clear lay-out of the countries and towns, and “fresh bread and olive oil”.

Apart from holding the ‘German’ Chairs in Hanover and Munich – the latter since 2002 – Ellerman acted as consultant to numerous foundations and was on the jury of international competitions. His master-classes, where a happy student-teacher atmosphere prevails, are sought-after by international up-and-coming violinists.

The star professor, who always allows his students the space necessary for their artistic and personal development, belongs to the rare breed of nonconformist and tolerant college professors, whose only aim it is to have his students achieve the best possible standard in preparation for their careers. His success proves him right.
